About Vitamin D

VITAMIN D WORKSHOP MISSION STATEMENT

The organization known as the Vitamin D Workshop was established in 1973, The primary mission of the Vitamin D Workshop is to conduct scientific meetings on all topics related to vitamin D, but particularly those in which active current research is being conducted. The term ‘vitamin D’ is used in the broadest fashion possible, and includes not only the parent vitamin D itself and its precursors, but any and all metabolites and modified forms (analogs) of vitamin D and its metabolites present in any biological system.  Attendance at the meetings is open to all scientists of the world who have an interest in furthering our understanding of the properties and biological purpose of vitamin D and related compounds.  When feasible, the Vitamin D Workshop endeavors to publish comprehensive reports of the scientific meeting in Proceedings which will be widely available.

Additional Information

The Vitamin D Workshop, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conduct and support of scientific meetings related to vitamin D. The head office of the Vitamin D Workshop is located in the Department of Biochemistry, University of California-Riverside, CA 92521. The Workshop is managed by a two-member Advisory Committee, and assisted by an approximately 40 member Program Committee. A new Program Committee is appointed for each Workshop. Both of these committees consist of professional scientists and clinicians from around the world.

The Vitamin D Workshop, Inc. typically conducts a five-day meeting that has traditionally been held every three years, alternating between Europe and North America. The attendees to the workshops typically include chemists, biochemists, physiologists, endocrinologists, and clinicians -- scientists of all of the disciplines essential to modern research pertaining to the many facets of vitamin D. During the course of the 5-day meeting, there can be 40-70 verbal presentations, as well as 300-400 poster presentations.

Background

There have been thirteen previous "Workshops on Vitamin D" over the interval 1973 through 2006.

Interest in and attendance at recent Vitamin D Workshops have been high despite the fact that there are now many annual meetings in the area of calcium regulating hormones and other steroid hormones. Besides the immensely beneficial accomplishment of bringing highly talented scientists together for a short, but intensive, period of time, the accomplishments of the vitamin D researchers have been promptly recorded and published for each Workshop in a series of 1000-page books. Information on the Proceedings of the first eleven workshops are described in detail on the Proceedings page; many can still be purchased.

The 13th Workshop on Vitamin D was held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in April 2006.
